In 2006, three local schools made 80 nest boxes for the flying squirrel project.  These schools were J.M.A. High School in Salisbury, Petitcodiac High School, and Riverside Consolidated.  The boxes were made in school shop classes where students learned about flying squirrels and their environment.  All of the squirrel boxes were placed on woodlots in the Pollett River Watershed, Fundy National Park and Caledonia Gorge trail.

Where do flying squirrels nest?
Flying squirrels live mainly in ‘dens’ or ‘nests’ in trees.  There are 3 types of dens that they live in: cavity nests, dreys (stick nests) or ground nests (very rare).  Flying squirrels in this area seem to prefer cavity nests although they are often found in stick nests.  These nests can be close to the bottom of trees or at the top.  Flying squirrels are secondary cavity nesters, which means they need someone else to build the hole and then they move in.  Many of the cavities in Fundy are made by woodpeckers, such as the hairy or pileated woodpecker.  Sometimes flying squirrels move into natural cavities, which are created as older trees begin to rot.  Go to the image gallery to see different types of nests.
